4th October 2016, 9:30am – 11:30am
Orangefield Presbyterian Church
I am delighted to be hosting a seminar for church leaders and leaders of other organisations with a Christian ethos on this important topic and to be co-leading it with Peter Lynas.
Peter is the Northern Ireland Director of Evangelical Alliance. He studied law and practised as a barrister in Belfast for five years before studying theology at Regent College in Vancouver. He teaches on faith at work at Westminster Theological Centre and serves on the board of Regent College. As well as experience in public policy, he appears regularly in the media and is a sought after speaker and I have no doubt that his input on this topic will be most beneficial.
Equality legislation rightly seeks to protect individuals against discrimination, something which Christian employers generally welcome. But what about when the Christian ethos of an organisation seems to conflict with the general principle that people should not be discriminated against on the grounds of, for example, religious belief, sexual orientation and gender re-assignment? When can an employer specify that the person who undertakes a certain role must be a Christian? How does the law define ‘discrimination’ and how do we define a ‘Christian’ in such circumstances? What does this mean for the conduct that the employer can expect from the employee inside and outside of work?
In this interactive session, Peter and I will address some of the issues that Christian employers should be considering around these difficult issues including what policies and procedures should be in place and what should be included in organisations’ statements of faith and codes of conduct. There will be opportunities to ask questions, enter into discussions and take away some written guidance.
The seminar is free to clients retaining the services of Mark Mason Employment Law and also to members of Evangelical Alliance. For other attendees, the session costs just £30 (inc VAT). For paying delegates, I’m offering a money back guarantee. If, after the session, you don’t believe that you got value from it, simply let me know and I will refund the money, no questions asked.
To book your place, please email mark@markmasonlaw.co.uk Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so early booking is advised and no more than two delegates may attend from any one organisation.
